Slovenia's retail sales rose 1.8% in May

Retail sales in Slovenia rose by 1.8% in May compared with the same month a year earlier. Fuel sales were the main driver of growth, while food retail sales continued to decline, the Statistical Office announced on June 29.
Retail sales of motor vehicle fuel increased by 13.3% compared to May 2025. Sales of non-food products rose by 1.6%, while food sales declined by 2.3%.
On a month-over-month basis, total retail sales in May fell by 0.3% compared to April.
Food sales fell by 1.0% compared to the previous month, while sales of non-food products declined by 0.6%. Fuel sales bucked the general trend, rising by 1.8% month-over-month.
From January through May, retail sales volume in Slovenia also increased by 1.8% compared to the same period last year.
Once again, the fuel retail sector recorded the strongest growth. Sales rose by 7.5% in the first five months of 2026 compared to the same period the previous year. Sales of non-food products rose by 2.8%, while food sales declined by 1.6% over the same period.
The latest figures show that the Slovenian retail sector as a whole continues to perform moderately. While fuel sales are supporting the market, the food retail sector remains under pressure.
