Yandex dominates Russia's search market

Yandex has definitively taken the lead in Russia’s search engine market. According to motoram.ru, the domestic tech company now accounts for about 70 percent of all search queries in the country. Google, the global market leader, reportedly accounts for the remainder.
This is remarkable not only because of the size of the Russian internet, known as Runet. What is particularly significant is that Yandex is one of the few local search engines worldwide that has actually overtaken Google in a major market. Unlike in China, for example, Google was never fundamentally blocked in Russia—competition remained formally open. This makes the lead that Yandex has now achieved all the more significant.
For Dmitry Masyuk, who heads the Search and Artificial Intelligence division at Yandex, the 70 percent threshold represents more than just a statistic. It symbolizes the company’s dominance in users’ daily lives: About seven out of ten search queries go through Yandex, while only about three go through Google.
Masyuk attributes this lead primarily to technological advances. Improved thematic search, more precise answers to specific queries, and deeper integration of AI have strengthened user engagement. Yandex is thus evolving from a traditional search service into a system that not only finds content but also directly processes and organizes it.
A Global Exception
From the company’s perspective, this development is virtually unique on an international scale. In most countries, Google dominates with market shares often exceeding 90 percent. It remains the exception for a local provider to prevail under competitive conditions.
While there are a few comparable cases, they are mostly due to specific local conditions. In China, for example, Baidu leads the market—though without real competition from Google. In South Korea, Naver holds its own thanks to strong local integration. In Japan, Yahoo! Japan is relevant, but its technology is based on Google. And in the Czech Republic, Seznam maintains a niche presence but lags significantly behind.
At the same time, the Russian technology sector has undergone fundamental changes since 2022. The withdrawal of Western providers has expanded the scope of action for domestic platforms. Yandex consistently leveraged this momentum and expanded its ecosystem—from search and mobility services to e-commerce.
Search as the Strategic Hub
Within this system, the search engine remains the central element. It not only generates advertising revenue but also provides data streams that feed other services within the group. Whoever controls search thereby controls a significant portion of digital value creation.
Accordingly, Yandex has invested heavily in recent years in machine learning, natural language processing, and AI-based features. The goal is to make search results faster, more precise, and more context-aware—while keeping pace with global developments in generative AI. According to Masyuk, it was precisely these innovations that were crucial in intensifying usage and increasing the volume of search queries.
Transformation of a Tech Giant
This rise coincides with a period of profound upheaval within the company itself. In 2024, the previous structure was split up: The Dutch parent company Yandex NV withdrew from Russia and sold the domestic business for approximately 475 billion rubles to a consortium led by local management.
With the newly founded Nebius Group, Volozh is now pursuing a global strategy in the field of cloud and AI infrastructure. The company operates data centers in several regions and counts international technology conglomerates among its clients. To finance further expansion, Nebius recently raised billions through convertible bonds.
Thus, Yandex today symbolizes the transformation of the Russian technology sector in two ways: domestically as a dominant digital platform—and abroad as the starting point for new, globally oriented tech structures. For users in Runet, the result is clear: in most cases, searches no longer start with Google, but with Yandex.
