Potanin buys Auto.ru

Potanin buys Auto.ru

The fintech group T-Technologies, led by entrepreneur Vladimir Potanin, is expanding its presence in the digital automotive market. The company is acquiring the Auto.ru vehicle platform from the technology group Yandex for approximately 35 billion rubles (about $380 million).

The transaction had been widely anticipated: T-Technologies had been considered the leading contender for weeks, although other major market players had also signaled interest. The purchase was financed through debt.

Strategic Expansion in the Automotive Sector

With this acquisition, T-Technologies is primarily pursuing one goal: the expansion of its auto loan business. The Auto.ru platform offers an attractive foundation for this, as a significant portion of the vehicles sold in Russia are listed there.

Industry observers view the purchase price as an ambitious valuation. At the same time, they point to the potential to integrate financial services directly into the vehicle trade and tap into new revenue streams.

Auto.ru is one of the country’s leading online marketplaces for vehicles. According to the company, approximately 43 percent of car sales were processed through the platform.

Yandex had already acquired the service in 2014 and further developed it in recent years. Now, the focus is shifting more toward other business areas.

Expansion of the Fintech Ecosystem

T-Technologies is thus continuing its expansion beyond traditional banking. In recent years, the group has made targeted investments in digital platforms and technology companies—including stakes in the cloud and fintech sectors.

With Auto.ru, a closer integration of the digital marketplace and financial services is now taking shape. The goal is to support customers throughout the entire value chain—from vehicle search to financing.
