Armenia focuses on semiconductor strategy

Armenia wants to focus its economy more strongly on high technology - and is focusing specifically on the semiconductor industry. Following a meeting of the Government Council chaired by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, representatives announced new initiatives to significantly expand the sector in the coming years. The government sees semiconductors as a key area for positioning itself in global technology markets. In particular, the increasing demand from artificial intelligence applications is strengthening the strategic focus on this industry. Building a technological ecosystem The programs presented are aimed at expanding research and development in the semiconductor sector and strengthening engineering capacities. At the same time, the government wants to create a competitive ecosystem that will be internationally competitive by the early 2030s. Armenia is relying on existing structures. Representatives highlighted the existing research and development centers and plan to expand these in a targeted manner. A particular focus is on training and retaining qualified specialists, who are considered a decisive factor for the growth of the sector. The government plans to specifically attract international specialists, define clear research priorities and intensify cooperation between universities and industry. The aim is to create an innovation-driven environment that will attract new companies and investments in the long term. Ruben Simonyan, Deputy Minister for High-Tech Industry, confirmed that a comprehensive technology strategy is currently being worked on. This is intended to place advanced engineering solutions and digital systems at the heart of economic development. Political control and implementation There is a consensus within the government that the new programs must be closely dovetailed with existing initiatives. The aim is to avoid duplicate structures and to ensure efficient implementation. Prime Minister Pashinyan called on the responsible authorities to further elaborate the concepts and develop concrete institutional mechanisms.
